Wairarapa College held a Cultural Award ceremony as part of the school's season of celebrating student success last week.
Presentations of Cultural and Blues and three Elites awards were made at the award evening to students for many activities including stage challenge, production, Shakespeare festival, singing, lighting, backstage, orchestra, composing and acting.
Three Elites were awarded to Year 13 students Alex Fafeita, who won a national award for his jazz composition; Ruby Bennett, who played flute with the New Zealand Secondary Schools' Orchestra; and Ryan Cundy, who was selected as a member of the Shakespeare's Globe Centre New Zealand Young Shakespeare Company (SGCNZ).
Each of the three recipients performed for the school after accepting their awards.
Alex and the EJs performed the original jazz piece Elevator with Alex drumming, Ruby on flute and Ryan rendered a scene from Shakespeare's The Tempest as Calaban, the role he performed with the SGCNZ.
