She said the council would like to strengthen its relationship with the youth council.
The idea proposed is to have a Beat Street, Youth 4 Youth, Youth 4 Community, Kia Kaha and Dream Team award instead of the usual awards. The awards would be given out for creativity, working with other youth, volunteer and community work, young people overcoming adversity and groups of young people making a difference.
The ideas for the new awards are still to go before the Masterton council.
There's also a suggestion of an overall excellence award but it hasn't been decided yet, said Mrs Patterson.
She said there might be a small prize monetary award because they are civic awards. "We think it's pretty exciting."
The ideas for the awards were partly inspired by a visit to Kapiti, said Chelsea Bull, chairwoman of the youth council.
The youth council and four councillors went to visit the Kapiti youth council to see what kind of things they were doing.
"It was good, we got to have a council-to-council talk," said Chelsea.
She said they also got plenty of other ideas from the Kapiti youth.
The youth council is in the midst of a lot of planning, said Chelsea.
They have previously run successful events like the "Live Life Loud" music and cultural event, held last year.
The youth council gives young people the opportunity to learn leadership skills and be involved in Masterton.
Chelsea said there are about 10 members at the moment.
Mrs Patterson said it was important to keep the youth council alive.
New members are always welcome as members often move away to go to university.
Anyone aged 12 to 24 can join the council.
