The detective who arrested James Fruean yesterday applauded the "outstanding bravery" of the 14-year-old victim.
Mana Faraimo said police commended her for courage throughout and her decision to face Fruean in court.
Mr Faraimo said from the outset the case had been a "whodunnit" as Fruean was unknown to his victim.
But police had located the culprit with the help of the girl, her mother and her extended family along with supporting agencies.
"Now a very dangerous man is behind bars for a significant time," he said.
