A early morning attack in central Auckland, which left a man on life support, appears to have been random, police say.
Detective senior sergeant Peter Florence said the 25-year-old had just walked out of the McDonald's near Britomart when he had a brief exchange of words with another male who was on the street.
"He's [offender] has just walked over to him and then punched him," Mr Florence said.'
The single blow to his head caused him to fall heavily to the ground and hit his head on the pavement.
The incident, which left the man unconscious, occurred at about 5.10am.
