A man was killed and two people injured when a car hit a power pole in Dunedin overnight.
Detective Sergeant Brett Roberts said a resident heard the crash on Tomahawk Road and found a Subaru on its roof.
No other vehicles were involved.
The 20-year-old driver died at the scene and the two passengers received minor injuries.
Mr Roberts said because of the injuries the driver received he would have to be formally identified with dental records.
All occupants were wearing seatbelts. At this stage it appeared speed, driver age, "fast modern cars" and wet road were factors in the accident, Mr Roberts said. It was not yet known whether alcohol was also involved.
