KEY POINTS:
The swans of Lake Pupuke on Auckland's North Shore had to make way for a few dragons at the weekend as boisterous dragon boat racing took over the waterway.
On Saturday it was corporate teams who took one another on over a 500m long course, and yesterday it was the turn of secondary schools from as far south as Christchurch.
Schoolgirls proved the keenest dragon slayers - there were 23 girls teams, 17 mixed teams and three boys teams.
However, the girls were not entirely fearless.
The teams from Diocesan School for Girls wore lifejackets, although other contenders for the title simply had to confirm they could swim.
It was the first time the event has been held on Lake Pupuke as the normal location, the popular Viaduct Harbour, proved tricky to book this year.
The top girls team were from Epsom Girls Grammar in Auckland, the top boys from Shirley Boys High School in Christchurch and the best mixed team were from Upper Hutt College.
