Although their disappointment in losing Mitre 10 Dream Home was plain to see, the yellow team have cause to celebrate, buying the house they rebuilt in an auction.
Patrick (Paddy) Wana and Neisha Boyd were downcast amid the celebrations of the winning blue team around them, but yesterday morning the pair were on the receiving end of better news.
They bought the former state house they renovated over 10 weeks on the show for $295,000 after it was passed in at $270,000.
Only one bidder was against Mr Wana and Ms Boyd.
Television New Zealand publicist Tim Aitken said it was not unusual for losing contestants to buy the homes they had worked on.
"It's totally normal and kind of how it works," he said.
Mr Aitken said the Whakatane couple would receive some assistance with the deposit on the home from TVNZ, Mitre 10 and Wizard Home Loans.
The popular show, which just completed its eighth series, was set in Whakatane.
Two Eastern Bay of Plenty couples competed against each other as they renovated identical state houses.
Over a series of weekends the eventual winners, the blue team of Helen Tulloch-Tupe and Kapi Tupe, and the yellow team, with the help of experts, friends and family, did up the neighbouring homes.
