Two yachties were rescued by fellow seafarers yesterday, after their 30 foot catamaran capsized during a race.
The boat tipped over about 7 nautical miles offshore, somewhere between Waihi Beach and Tauranga Harbour, about 2.30pm yesterday, Sergeant Craig Madden of Tauranga police said.
The boat had been competing in the Tauranga Yacht Club's annual Easter Auckland to Tauranga race.
The two people on board were pulled out of the water by fellow boaties, and taken ashore at Sulphur Point.
Regional Harbourmaster Peter Buell said the capsized vessel was then marked with navigation lights so it could be located and brought ashore in a joint effort between the yacht club and the boat's owners.
