KEY POINTS:
Nai Yin Xue had talked about killing his wife, a friend has said.
A body, thought to be that of his wife An An Liu, was found in his car parked outside their Auckland home yesterday.
The Melbourne Age newspaper quoted a friend of the fugitive who said Mr Xue had spoken in the past about killing his wife.
Friends had tried to talk him out of it.
"We never knew whether he would do it or not," the friend said.
He said Mr Xue's friends tried to talk him out of such thoughts.
"Nobody could know for sure that he would do it. As a friend, you could only try to give him some help, to make him not think of the bad things."
The newspaper said Mr Xue felt no hope and felt he was being "played" by his wife, that she did not really like him or love him.
Xue abandoned the couple's three-year-old daughter Qian at a railway station in Melbourne on Saturday before flying to the US.
Police in New Zealand want to speak to him about the body they found yesterday.
