Christmas will be warm and mostly dry in the north, wet in parts of the south and windy between.
Weatherwatch analyst Philip Duncan predicted Auckland and Northland would have temperatures in the mid-20s on Friday.
Aucklanders can expect high humidity of about 85 per cent and possibly evening showers.
Similar weather is forecast for Bay of Plenty, while Hawke's Bay can expect a 10 per cent chance of rain, humidity up to 60 per cent and light winds.
Taranaki can expect an "annoying breeze" 92 per cent humidity but Wellington is set for gusts and a modest high of 18.
Festive weather for the South Island is also a mixed bag, said Duncan.
Christchurch can expect a gusty 30km/h northerly. The high will be no more than 20. Dunedin should have a 30 km/h north westerly and temperatures in the low 20s.
