He had been involved with the Russian Circus and found work at the Kiwi Equestrian Centre in Auckland where he was treated like family.
Mr Beattie said while working at the equestrian centre Melikov became a stunt horseman on the Xena shoot in west Auckland.
In May 2002 he moved to Awahuri, near Feilding, to work as a stablehand.
He was boarding with his new boss' daughter and her partner when he lost his job. He left in a car he owed his boss money for.
Mr Beattie said Melekov drove to Palmerston North to visit friends after withdrawing $400 - emptying his bank account.
He then headed to Auckland where he caught up with his boss from the equestrian centre looking for employment.
Unable to secure work, he headed south again stopping at the reserve by Lake Taupo when his petrol light came on.
Mr Beattie said police became involved after being told about an abandoned car.
They found it unlocked with the keys on the floor and Melikov's belongings still inside.
There was glass from two picture frames on the ground beside the vehicle and a seatbelt had been cut from the car with the glass.
The lake was searched without sucess but police found two "significant" photos "screwed up" on the beach - one of Melikov with Xena star Lucy Lawless, the other of an actor from the show's set.
Videos from the set were also found.
"Apparently Mr Melikov was extremely proud of this photograph," Mr Beattie said.
He said the missing man was depressed, in financial difficulty and missing his family in Russia.
"My personal belief is he has entered the lake. It's always extremely difficult when you don't have a body. It's frustrating and difficult for the family. You just have to make the most of the clues left behind."
Coroner Matenga said he was satisfied Melikov died by drowning in Lake Taupo on or about September 8, 2002.
"I cannot be satisfied he has definitely killed himself although the circumstances are highly suggestive. There is still reasonable doubt. I stop short of finding he has taken his own life."
