Judith Wyeth provided the individual highlight for Wairarapa at the central region octagonal bowls tournament played in Palmerston North last weekend.
Wyeth, from Masterton, faced formidable opposition in the singles in the senior women's section and finished with the excellent record of four wins and three losses.Only national reps Karen Coombes and Sharon Sims had a better record with Coombes winning all seven of her games.
Also performing well for Wairarapa in the senior women's event were the pair of Avis Cooper and Liz Bondy. They picked up three wins and two of their losses were by narrow margins..
The triple of Daphne Traynor, Robyn Schischka and Barbara Logue had two wins to leave Wairarapa in seventh place out of the eight teams but only four points adrift of fourth placed Wellington.
It was a different story for the Wairarapa senior men's team though. They finished a distant last in their division, struggling to cope with both the slick greens and the windy conditions.
Singles player Les O'Donovan claimed the scalp of national rep Phillip Skoglund and, remarkably, had the misfortune to be beaten oin the tie breaker in all six of his other matches. The pair of John Clayfdon and Ian Monaghan had just the one win while the triple of Peter McGillicuddy, John Polson and Kerry Hannah had two wins.
The Wairarapa development squad men's team fared much better than their senior counterparts, finishing third in their section which was played under the old system of first to 25 shots for singles, 21 ends for pairs and 15 ends for fours.
The four of Gary Stammers, Hannam Lambert, Bev Entwhistle and Jamie O'Kane led the way with 4 ? wins, singles player Brian Schischka had four wins and the pair of Graeme Tindall and John Harmon had two wins.
In the development squad women's section Wairarapa tailed the field, managiung just four wins overall. They suffered through a number of players beiung unavailable for selection, preferring instead to trial for the Goldies Oldies team later in the month.
