A large hole has appeared in Albert Park, briefly exposing the maze of World War II air-raid tunnels only days from the start of Heritage Week.
Soil has subsided into one of the equipment rooms, metres below the surface, which blew air into a street system of tunnels built during the war to shelter 20,000 people.
Auckland City Council fenced off the hole when it appeared two weeks ago and filled in the equipment room yesterday with dry mix concrete to make the grassed area safe for park users.
