A 38-year-old motorcyclist has lost his leg after being hit head-on by a car travelling the wrong way on Auckland's southern motorway.
The man had been riding his motorcycle south when he was struck by the car, which did not stop, near Otahuhu just after 1am.
He was taken to Middlemore Hospital with head and serious leg injuries but his leg was removed during surgery, said police communications shift Inspector Norman Upjohn.
Police said they received several calls from motorists before and after the incident, reporting a vehicle travelling north at speed in the southbound lanes.
The man was hospitalised with head and serious leg injuries following the incident.
