A fire blazed through about 20 cars at a wrecking yard in Porirua before being brought under control last night.
Murray Dunbar from the Fire Service communications centre in Wellington said four units attended the fire in Kenepuru Drive opposite Kenepuru Hospital.
A worker at the yard called emergency services just before 4pm and firefighters left the scene about 8pm after extinguishing the blaze.
Mr Dunbar said the vehicles were stacked together and the fire spread quickly from one to the other, with access presenting the main difficulty for fire fighters.
He said it was considered a rubbish fire, where there was generally no need to investigate.
It was likely to have started accidentally by someone at the yard.
