KEY POINTS:
Police are considering changes to a charge of wounding with intent laid against the teenager who is alleged to have killed Augustine Borrell.
The wounding charge relates to a fight at a St Marys Bay party just hours before the murder at a Herne Bay party last weekend.
Detective Senior Sergeant Steve Breach, the officer in charge of the case, said police were in the early days of the investigation on Tuesday when the 18-year-old was charged with wounding teenager David Moynahan.
Witnesses have since given a different version of events.
One, a teenage girl who did not want to be identified, said lots of people, including the accused, were drinking at the party, which was being held by a teenager called Joseph in celebration of his 16th birthday.
"All the boys that night were wasted as, off alcohol and some probably off drugs, as a lot of the group of people there have been known to smoke a lot of weed and some even P."
About 10pm a "group of white guys" turned up and one of them hit a teenager called Steven in the head with a piece of wood.
That prompted a group fight but the others, including the accused, backed off when Steve got "really mad and started smashing" the newcomers.
"It was just Steve and all the white boys fighting."
The girl said Steve was hitting the white boys with an object, possibly a broken stick or broken bottle, leaving one of them with a gash on the back of his head.
"It was dark outside but you could tell it was only Steve fighting them hard out and [the accused] was present at the party but wasn't involved in hurting that guy."
The girl said the accused and his friends left to go to another party, but Steve went back inside with blood on his hands saying, "I just f***** this guy up."
The girl said many of the witnesses to the fight later received a text message from Steve asking them not to "snitch" on him.
Mr Breach said police were now getting a clearer picture of what had happened and once the remainder of the witnesses had been spoken to, the accused's charges might be changed or amended. New people might also be arrested.
"Initially, when the charges were laid, we were going on the information we had at that time, and now ... as a result of speaking to a number of other people there is definitely the possibility that there may be further people charged in regards to that party."
