The worst may be over for hard-hit residents trying to clean up from the deluge on the North Island's East Coast - but there's more rain to come.
A heavy-rain warning is in place for Hawkes Bay today and Gisborne could get more downpours.
Wild weather earlier in the week caused slips, brought down trees, burst river banks and closed highways. A major clean-up is in full force in Gisborne, including Wainui Beach, and the Gladstone Rd bridge was finally cleared of debris yesterday.
River levels have fallen and water has drained out of flooded homes leaving behind silt, ruined carpets and water damage.
Residents on Fergusson Drive in Gisborne were forced to evacuate when floodwater swamped their homes and Gisborne resident Rebecca Watson said the whole downstairs floor of her friend's Vogel St house was underwater.
