Former Greytown-Tuhirangi winger Lance Workman is making a big impact in Auckland rugby, but in a different position.
Workman, who was an outstanding hockey player before turning his attention to rugby, where he repped for Wairarapa-Bush at senior level, joined up with the Mt Wellington club this year at the invitation of their coach Tony Hargood, himself a well-known figure in Wairarapa-Bush circles
He had a stint as coach of the Marist club's senior A side and was also selector-coach of Wairarapa-Bush B..
With Mt Wellington, who currently lie third in the Auckland B grade, lacking a specialist first-five Hargood converted Workman into that position and he has been a huge success there, not only showing astute tactical judgement, but also impressing with the accuracy of his goal kicking. In fact, just last weekend he kicked a late penalty to give Mt Wellington a narrow in over Roskill Districts.
That Workman has impressed Auckland officials with his ability was indicated when he was named in an Auckland XV to play in yesterday's trial match against the All Blacks team which is preparing to travel to Argentina for a test there.
