Workers at a meat processing plant in Te Aroha were evacuated after a chemical leak this morning.
Staff at the Silver Ferns Farms factory on Stanley Rd South raised the alarm around 2.45am when an unknown quantity of ammonia leaked from a machinery room, Fire Service northern communications team leader Dallas Ramsay said.
The plant was evacuated while an internal system isolated the leak remotely.
On-site engineers confined the leak to a machinery room, assisted by the Fire Service.
Work to ventilate the air systems and clear the ammonia was being carried out, Newstalk ZB reported.
