The makeover of the island in Masterton's Queen Elizabeth Park is part way through and it is hoped the project will be well and truly finished by the start of next summer.
Arborists have worked on existing, mature trees and scrubby, unwanted vegetation has been taken out. Limestone paths have been put down, and a tree planting programme is about to start.
Parks and Open Spaces Task Group chairman Gary Caffell said a landscape plan prepared by Rachel Callaghan was the blueprint for the re-development and that the working party entrusted with the project would meet again soon to decide on the next stage.
The wide-ranging plans for the island include an Exploration Trail for children so they can have fun and learn at the same time.
Mr Caffell said the working party was relying on the help of volunteers to carry the project forward and had already had offers of help.
