Work starts on Featherston supermarket

It's been a long time coming but work has finally started on the new Featherston supermarket complex.

Contractors yesterday began setting up to build the cafe, which will be connected to the supermarket with an outdoor area seating 50 people.

The new 900sq m complex is being built where the existing Four Square supermarket is.

"It's fantastic," said Allan Pollard, chief executive of Trust House. "It's very positive for the community that we have finally got to this day after much planning."

Resource consent for the building was granted in 2012.

Contractor Rigg Zschokke was about to start bringing in the pre-fabricated structures which had been constructed in Masterton.

Structures like the prenail frames, would go up at the site soon, said Bryce Jolliffe, Rigg Zschokke site foreman.

Mr Pollard said the design of the building was modern.

"It's a very contemporary grocery store for the local community."

The $2.5 million project is expected to take six months to complete.

The existing post office and Lotto shop will be a part of the new supermarket and there will also be a new bottle store attached to it with a separate entrance.

The outdoor area of the complex will have a glass wall to act as a windshield along with a new carpark.
