Work and Income is set to cut 35 roles from its 11 regional offices.
Work and Income's national commissioner Carl Crafar confirmed this afternoon that the ministry had initiated a review of back-office structures and the functions of its 11 regional offices.
Mr Crafar said the process would not impact on the ability of frontline staff to deliver and the review did not necessarily mean 35 people would lose their jobs.
The review would look at reporting lines and back office roles and positions.
Labour's social development spokeswoman Jacinda Ardern has said the staff cuts will increase the workload of frontline staff.
