Women of Wairarapa should learn to release their potential, says New Zealand's longest-serving Olympic athlete.
Olympic gold medal-winning windsurfer Barbara Kendall yesterday spoke to 65 women about "things I've learned competing over 21 years at the top level".
She had been invited by Sara Orsborn and Carissa Fairbrother of Bubbles & Inspiration.
Before her seminar, entitled Let Go; Release Your Potential, she spoke to the Wairarapa Times-Age about her motivational mission and message.
Kendall has competed in every Olympics since winning gold in Barcelona in 1992.
She won silver at Atlanta in 1996, bronze at Sydney in 2000, and placed fifth and sixth at Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008 respectively.
Potential, she said, was a moving target.
"For me, it's being the best you can be in every area you are in, and feeling happy."
Finding that potential was all about attitude.
"The way your mind thinks reflects how your body is going to respond."
Overcoming barriers, too, could be a mental game, "realising it's just the way you think; it's not necessarily reality".
Kendall said women "tend to be a lot better in touch with self-growth than men".
"We've had to be because we've raised families."
