The High Court in Wellington has heard how Janet Moses' grandfather cried himself to sleep when he discovered she had died.
Nine people are on trial charged with the 22-year-old's manslaughter, after she died during a curse-lifting ceremony in Wainuiomata in 2007.
The ceremony was carried out at the house of Janet Moses' grandfather John Rawiri's flat. The court has heard Mr Rawiri stayed in the bedroom looking after all the children throughout.
Mr Rawiri said he could hear chanting coming from the lounge day and night and only left the room to go to the toilet. He said when his son came in and told him Janet had died, he left the room to be with her and could not stop crying.
Mr Rawiri said he had to be put to bed, where he eventually cried himself to sleep.
