A woman whose naked body was found floating off a Coromandel beach yesterday may not have been in the water very long, say police.
The body was found about 20 metres offshore at a beach at Tairua on the eastern side of the peninsula about 1pm yesterday.
Police did not believe her death was suspicious and said today they thought they knew her identity.
"We will be following it up today and that is reasonably significant because it will give us a better picture of what has happened and we can do a post mortem to make sure there is nothing suspicious," Senior Sergeant Rex Knight, of Thames police, said.
He said police had found a car which had been where it was found for about a day.
"Our indications on the condition of the body, being in the water, is that she hasn't been there that long."
He said a body in the water was a "horrible thing to deal with" even after a short period.
The woman was short and slim with short dark hair and possibly caucasian.
