KEY POINTS:
A female English tourist fended off a knife-wielding sex attacker at a Kaikoura motor camp early today.
The 23-year-old was sexually assaulted in the 3am attack in a toilet cubicle at the A1 Motor Camp, police said.
She suffered an injury to her hand during a struggle with the man.
The man, a caucasian believed to be aged in his 20s, ran off after the incident.
A police spokeswoman said detectives from Blenheim and Christchurch, together with forensic experts from Environmental Science and Research, were travelling to Kaikoura to assist in the hunt for the man.
Food stolen from the motor camp kitchen and discarded near the toilet block might be linked to the attack, she said.
The attacker was described as about 180cm tall, with brown hair, and was wearing shorts, a T-shirt and work boots.
