A 53-year-old Napier woman is in Hawke's Bay Hospital undergoing surgery for multiple stab wounds after an incident early today which police are treating as a possible home invasion.
Detective sergeant Brian Schaab of the Napier CIB said the woman, who he said suffered from a medical condition, called 111 just after 4.40am and asked for an ambulance.
Ambulance officers subsequently called police after discovering she had received several stab wounds. One had led to a punctured lung.
She also had lacerations to her hands.
"We have not been able to speak with her at length yet. We are hoping to later today," Mr Schaab said.
While being treated at the scene the woman had not been able to give police a description of an intruder or any other details about the incident.
Mr Schaab said police wanted to hear from anyone who may have seen any suspicious activity in the Taradale Road- Onekawa area around the time of the incident.
