KEY POINTS:
A woman was knocked unconscious and stabbed at her rural property in Kaharoa, 20km north of Rotorua, early today.
Detective Sergeant Garry Hawkins, of Rotorua CIB, said the woman and her family were at their Central Road home at 4am today, when she heard someone interfering with a vehicle outside.
The woman went to check on the vehicle and was hit from behind, and knocked out.
When she came to, she found she had been stabbed in the abdomen.
The woman has been discharged from hospital.
Mr Hawkins said the attack was "completely unprovoked" and serious.
Police are appealing for any reports of suspicious behaviour or interference with property around the time of the attack.
