A 65-year-old American woman was flown to hospital with serious injuries after a car and van belonging to a tourist operator collided near Waitomo in Waikato this morning.
The woman sustained multiple fractures and was trapped in the car for more than an hour before being freed by rescue crews. She was flown by the Waikato Westpac Rescue Helicopter to Waikato Hospital.
Police said the incident occurred on Waitomo Caves Rd near the main cave complex about 9.50am.
The van driver, a 49-year-old local woman, sustained moderate injuries, and was also taken to Waikato Hospital for further treatment.
