A woman whose her ute was struck by a coal train on the West Coast of the South Island has died in hospital, nine days after the accident.
The ute of Reefton dairy farmer Jane Sluys, 56, and a fully-laden 2000 tonne train collided at a crossing near Inangahua east of Westport on January 23.
The crossing was protected by stop signs but did not have barriers or flashing lights.
The grandmother was airlifted to Christchurch Hospital by the Greymouth-based rescue helicopter.
She fought for her life for more than a week before passing away on Saturday.
