The cause of a fire in a block of four flats in Mt Wellington last night has not yet been determined.
Fire investigators have been working at the scene of the blaze since 8am today.
A woman remains in a serious condition after the fire. Northern fire communications shift manager Paul Radden said basic first aid was applied to the woman before she was taken to Middlemore Hospital.
Emergency services were called to the Hamlin Road property at 9.40pm last night. A neighbour had heard the woman screaming and saw smoke billowing from her flat, Mr Radden said.
The woman remains in the Intensive Care Unit today in a serious but stable condition.
