KEY POINTS:
A woman handed a note to a bank teller yesterday saying there was a bomb in the building and demanding money.
Members of the Auckland-based New Zealand Defence Force bomb squad were called after a suspicious looking shoe box was found in the bank.
Police will not now say what was found in the package.
The blond woman in her twenties went into the ANZ branch in the Hamilton suburb of Te Rapa at about 1.45 yesterday afternoon.
She handed over the note saying a bomb was in the building and was given "an undisclosed amount of money", said Waikato police spokesman Andrew McAlley.
The woman left the bank and got into a off-white Nissan Skyline driven by a man, he said.
The building was evacuated and police closed off Te Rapa road while a remote controlled machine was used to inspect the package, Mr McAlley said.
He said: "An initial check of the package, described as a shoe box, necessitated the use of a non-incendiary device to open it up for investigation.
"Police are currently unable to comment on the device found inside the package."
