An injured tramper has been winched out of a valley in the Rimutaka Ranges and flown to hospital tonight.
The woman, in her 50s, set off her personal locator beacon after hurting herself while tramping through the dense bush in the Orongorongo Valley.
Life Flight's Westpac Rescue Helicopter was tasked to the job by the Rescue Coordination Centre New Zealand (RCCNZ).
Chopper crewman Colin Larsen said with no suitable place to land among the high trees and thick foliage, the crew winched the woman 120 feet into the helicopter.
She was transported to Wellington Regional Hospital in a stable condition, Larsen said.
