Police say a middle aged female lying on train tracks near Allardice Street in Dannevirke has been struck and killed by a train.
Police say it appears at about 8pm last night the female was lying on the tracks prior to the train's arrival. She has suffered instantly fatal injuries.
The deceased appears to be a middle aged European however her identity has not been established.
The train driver is shaken by this incident and is receiving support from KiwiRail.
The section of track where this incident occurred is well away from any roadway or recognised pedestrian crossing.
