A woman is dead after being attacked on a service station forecourt in Wellington late last night.
Police were called to the Mobil Mart Service Station in suburban Johnsonville about 11.55pm and found the woman lying on the forecourt with "significant injuries".
Ambulance and fire service staff were not able to revive her.
Wellington CIB Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Borrell said the woman knew the attacker, who was eventually restrained by witnesses.
A full homicide investigation had been launched, Mr Borrell said.
"Our role is to fully investigate this death to clearly establish the facts and background leading up to it," he said.
"This includes identifying and speaking with all the witnesses to this attack, of which there were a number."
A 48-year-old Porirua man has been charged with murder and will appear in the Wellington District Court on Monday.
