KEY POINTS:
One person has died and another has been seriously injured after a car crash south of Kerikeri in the Bay of Islands.
Initial reports indicated that a car with three elderly occupants left State Highway 10 near the Kerikeri turnoff and hit a tree, police said. No other vehicle is thought to have been involved.
Inspector Ian Brooker said emergency services were at the scene of the accident and the Serious Crash Unit was investigating.
He said one woman had died and another occupant had been airlifted to Whangarei hospital with serious injuries, while the third person suffered only minor injuries.
Diversions are in place at Te Ahu Ahu Road for northbound traffic and at Wiroa Road for southbound.
