A middle-aged woman has died after being struck by a train in the Auckland suburb of Mt Albert.
While it was initially believed the victim was a child aged about 10-years-old, police have now confirmed that the body is that of a middle-aged female.
The woman's identity was yet to be established but police said they wanted to allay the fears of many concerned parents ringing authorities following the death.
Police northern communications shift commander Matt Rogers said the train driver had given police officers a brief account of the incident and train passengers who witnessed the incident would receive victim support.
"They are clearly disturbed by what they've seen.''
