Woman injured in Takanini crash was 'thrown into ditch'

A motorcyclist critically injured in a crash in Auckland yesterday was a woman in her 40s who was thrown into a ditch after the collision.

The Auckland Rescue Helicopter Trust this morning released more details about the crash in Takanini.

Emergency services were called to the scene at the intersection of Porchester Rd and Popes Rd at 1.52pm yesterday.

The helicopter trust said a woman in her 40s had been riding a motorcycle which crashed into a car in a high-speed zone.

"She was thrown into the ditch ... On arrival, the patient was conscious and in the care of St John ambulance, but suffering a major leg injury."

The woman was taken by road ambulance to Middlemore Hospital in a critical condition. She was given a blood transfusion en route.

Police yesterday closed the road and set up diversions while the police serious crash unit carried out a scene examination.
