KEY POINTS:
A 19-year-old woman from Motueka remains in a serious condition after the car she was driving left the road and ended up in an estuary last night.
Sergeant Dale Jenkins said it appeared that the car drifted off Wharf Road in Motueka and collided with a tree and came to rest on mud.
The tide was out so the woman did not end up in water but the car was extensively damaged.
Police became aware of the incident at 10.45pm but the actual incident may have happened earlier. Investigations are continuing.
The woman was flown to Nelson Hospital by rescue helicopter.
