Woman in critical condition after central North Island crash

A 25-year-old-woman is in a critical but stable condition after the car she was driving and a logging truck collided in the central North Island.

The woman sustained head and abdominal injuries and was rushed to Waikato Hospital by the Westpac rescue helicopter, where she remains in the high dependency unit.

Police were called to the scene, on State Highway 1 close to the SH30 turn off, near Atiamuri, at 4.50am.

It is understood the driver of the truck was unhurt.

There are no diversions in place, but drivers should expect delays.

In a separate crash, a truck and trailer rolled south of a roundabout connecting SH1 and SH5 in Tirau at 8am.

The driver remained in the cab until power lines touching the truck were moved.

Traffic is being diverted onto SH28, and onto SH5 while the scene is being cleared.

The driver is not seriously injured.

And on SH3 at 4.30pm yesterday, a two car collision near Pio Pio left a 50-year-old New Plymouth man and his wife with multiple injuries.

Both patients were airlifted to Waikato Hospital.

Then at 6pm yesterday, a car carrying a Te Kuiti family of five crashed down an embankment near Otorohanga.

Injuries suffered by the family members ranged from minor to moderate.

The Waikato Westpac Rescue Helicopter transported a 46-year-old and two 19-year-olds to Waikato Hospital.
