A 27-year-old woman was stabbed in an unprovoked attack in Gisborne as she walked home in the early hours of New Year's Day.
She and a 24-year-old woman were attacked by a group of young Maori men armed with knives, bottles and a fence post.
They shouted gang slogans at the two unarmed women and taunted them as they walked home along Tyndall Rd, in the suburb of Kaiti, about 3am.
Senior Sergeant Mick Lander said the 27-year-old received multiple stab wounds.
She was taken to the emergency department at Gisborne Hospital with a wound above her right eye and another to the left side of her chest. She also received a deep cut to her hand as she tried to defend herself.
