A 24-year-old Oamaru woman who stepped out in front of a truck on State Highway 1 in north Oamaru after drinking alcohol and inhaling butane "came off much worse for wear", her counsel, Kelvin Campbell, told the Oamaru District Court yesterday.
Angie Jane Bryant, unemployed, was appearing for sentence after being convicted of causing a criminal nuisance by failing to keep to the footpath, knowing it would endanger the public, on October 19 and failing to comply with a sentence of intensive supervision by leaving residential treatment on February 4.
Judge Brian Callaghan, of Christchurch, sentenced her to 12 months intensive supervision which included a condition she attend a residential course at Odyssey House, which she had been accepted for.
Prosecutor Tim Hambleton said Bryant stepped out into the SH 1 north-bound lane near Clare St. Affected by alcohol and butane, she thought she had enough room to cross, but misjudged the distance and walked directly into the path of a truck.
She was hit by the truck, knocked off her feet, lost consciousness and was taken to Oamaru Hospital.
