KEY POINTS:
An 18-year-old woman hit by a train this morning is in a stable condition following emergency surgery at Christchurch Hospital.
Detective Inspector Malcolm Johnston said emergency services were called to suburban Addington about 6am.
St John paramedics said she had "very serious injuries" all over her body when she arrived at hospital.
Mr Johnston said police were disappointed people were still putting themselves in harm's way around train tracks.
"The impact it has on train drivers when things go wrong is significant," he told the Stuff website.
