A woman has died in a fire in a suburban Auckland house.
Called to the fire in Birdwood Avenue, Papatoetoe at 8.25pm, firefighters arrived at the two-storey house to find the building well ablaze.
Firefighters entered the house, finding the body of the woman, Auckland Fire communications shift manager Tony McDonald said.
Police and fire safety investigators were at the scene, though it was too early to say what caused the fire, he said.
In another nearby incident in Calvert Ave in Mangere, which was reported at exactly the same time, firefighters raced to a reported building fire.
Instead, they found a flaming 12-year-old girl, who had accidentally had ignited fumes from the petrol she was sniffing.
The flaming child was extinguished in a nearby pond, then taken to the nearby Middlemore Hospital.
The girl was seriously injured in the incident.
"If anything, it will be her proximity to Middlemore that will save her," Mr McDonald said.
