KEY POINTS:
A woman has been found beaten unconscious in her Mt Roskill home.
The woman's husband, who is on a business trip, raised the alarm after not being able to get through on the phone.
The couple's 19 year-old daughter went to the house to find her mother unconscious with serious head injuries in her bedroom.
Auckland Police spokeswoman Noreen Hegarty said the 46-year-old woman spent last night in intensive care at Auckland Hospital where she is in a stable but critical condition.
Ms Hegarty said the daughter was traumatised after finding her badly hurt mother.
"No matter how many times you get faced with these sorts of things they are always difficult and one wonders at the thinking of people who inflict these sorts of things on others," she said.
The Whitmore Rd home is cordoned off today while ESR scientists carry out examinations.
Ms Hegarty said police would like to hear from anyone who saw or heard suspicious behaviour around Whitmore Rd between mid-afternoon on Sunday and 8pm last night.
