A rusty knife blade wasn't quite what Merial Mitchell was expecting when she opened her yoghurt, but that's what she got.
Mrs Mitchell, 86, found the 3cm disposable blade when she opened a one litre tub of Strawberry Yoplait she had bought from New Plymouth's Pak 'n Save supermarket, the Taranaki Daily News reported today.
It had gone through the container's lid but wasn't noticeable until the tub was opened.
"If that had dropped into the yoghurt, you wouldn't have noticed when you dished it out and it could have got halfway down your throat," Mrs Mitchell said.
"A cut from that could be potentially very dangerous."
Mrs Mitchell's daughter, Daryl Boys, rung the supermarket but no one returned her call.
"It is obviously a Pak 'n Save thing, when they've opened the case. They would have known that it happened because they would have had to go and get a new knife," Mrs Boys told the newspaper.
Pak 'n Save owner Alan Melody said he would not comment until he knew the facts and had spoken to Mrs Mitchell, which he planned to do today.
