KEY POINTS:
A 17-year-old woman is fighting for her life after a head-on collision on State Highway 3 near Te Kuiti yesterday.
Police said the young woman was a front-seat passenger in a northbound Mazda saloon, which first crashed into a turning truck and trailer unit then careered into the path of a Honda Civic at the intersection of SH3 and Oparure Rd about 2pm.
Waikato Hospital spokeswoman Mary Anne Gill said the woman was in a critical condition.
A Taumarunui couple, in their 70s, who were in the Honda, are in a comfortable condition and recovering from their injuries in another ward of the hospital.
The couple's seven and nine-year-old grandchildren were shaken but unhurt in the crash and taken through to Hamilton overnight, police said.
