A woman who fought off an attacker at an Auckland train station last night is being praised by police for her "gutsy display".
Police are now looking for a man with visible scratches on his face which the woman inflicted during the vicious attack.
Waitakere detective sergeant Peter Litherland said the 26-year-old woman had got off a western bound train about 7.40pm at the Sunnyvale train station and taken a walkway leading to Newham Place.
A man who got off the same train followed her.
"He then attacked the female from behind, grabbing her clothing and punching her in the face in an attempt to get her onto the ground." But she fought back.
