A woman is tonight fighting for her life after falling down rocks into a Coromandel river.
A spokesman for the Auckland Rescue Helicopter at Whitianga said the incident occurred in the Kauaeranga Valley, east of Thames, about 8pm.
The woman, in her 20s, fell down a steep cliff and into
the river below, striking her head on the way down.
She was pulled from the river unconscious and a St John paramedic "incubated" her, taking over her breathing using medical apparatus.
Due to the inaccessible location she was winched onto a rescue helicopter and flown to Waikato Hospital where she was in a critical condition.
