A young woman is believed to have broken her back after falling off a rail bridge near Masterton last night.
Police said the 25-year-old appears to have fallen about 10m to the ground in the accident at Mauriceville, north of Masterton, about 6pm.
Senior Sergeant Carolyn Watson of Masterton Police said officers provided first aid to the woman, before she was taken to Masterton Hospital.
She was assessed as having a broken back, and was flown to the Burwood Spinal Unit.
Ms Watson said police inquiries into the incident were continuing.
